Form Energy, which is backed by the Bill Gates-led investment firm Breakthrough Energy Ventures, claims to have invented a battery design capable of storing up to 100 hours of electricity for less than $20 per kWh. The Georgia Power collaboration is the company’s largest announced deployment to date. Georgia Power requested permission in its January 2022 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) to own and operate 1,000 MW of energy storage by 2030, with a focus on long-duration storage. Southern Business, Georgia Power’s parent company, is an investor in Form Energy through the Energy Impact Partners firm and has included the company in its IRP.
