The new onboard charger technology for electric vehicles claims to eliminate the need for an external power electronics interface essential for EV propulsion mode. The IIT researchers hope that this new charging system will be able to cut the cost of electric vehicles by 40-50 percent. IIT BHU’s Chief Project Investigator, Rajeev Kumar Singh said that due to the “lack of high power off-board charging infrastructure”, automakers currently incorporate an onboard charging system into their cars which raises the cost of production. Citing this problem, Singh and his team propose a new onboard charging technique that might halve the cost of manufacturing thus pushing automakers to produce low-cost electric vehicles to reach more people, eventually turning India into an EV-only country.
